  • Rafa Expects Loyalty From Midfield Duo

Rafa Benitez believes Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano owe it to Liverpool to stay at the club.

Midfield duo Alonso and Mascherano have both been strongly linked with moves away from Anfield to Spain this summer.

Real Madrid have openly declared their interest in Spanish ace Alonso, while Barcelona are keeping tabs on Mascherano.

Benitez is confident the key duo will remain on Merseyside and he has revealed he would like the pair to show some loyalty to Liverpool.

Mascherano & Alonso are attracting interest form Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively.

Mascherano & Alonso are attracting interest form Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively.

“I do not think Alonso or Mascherano will go. It is clear that they both are under contract with long-term agreements. That is it,” insisted Benitez.

“There has been a lot of things written, a lot of rumours, but both players are under contract and we have no more need to talk about things.

“They are both very good players and I will be very pleased to keep them. They both have very good contracts.

“We signed them both from different situations. Alonso was coming from Real Sociedad and nobody had really heard much of him outside of Spain, he did well and we renewed his contract because of that.

“Mascherano came from West Ham where he had not been doing well. We brought him here and gave him a good contract, so we are very pleased with them both and that Liverpool has been very good to them.”

Analysis:  You can tell from Rafa’s statement that this whole situation is taking its toll on him, as he desperately wants them to stay.  He has a point with bringing them from Sociedad and West Ham, but then again, that happens regularly in football.  Players move on.  It happens 90% of the time.

Result:  Expect one to stay and one to go.  Mascherano’s mistress is supposedly the one who wants the move away from England (as she lacks friends, hates the weather and can’t speak the language), though he has had a contract offer rebuffed for a reported £90 p/w.  Alonso has been the subject of uncertainty for some time.  Most are tipping him to leave the Reds.

Alonso Fails to Rule Out Anfield Exit
    July 2, 2009, 9:13 PM
Filed under: la liga, premier league | Tags: , ,

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso insists he would have ‘no regrets’ about staying at Anfield, but has refused to rule out a big-money move to Real Madrid.

Alonso was an integral part of the Anfield outfit last season.

Alonso was an integral part of the Anfield outfit last season.

The Spain international, who scored the winning goal for his country in Sunday’s Confederations Cup third-placed play-off win over hosts South Africa, has been strongly linked with a £25million switch to the Bernabeu over the past 12 months.

Alonso looked set to be sold last summer in order to make room for Gareth Barry, then of Aston Villa, before the deal collapsed and the 27-year-old was reported to have been offended by manager Rafa Benitez’s apparent desire to cash in.

Benitez maintains he does not want to part company with the influential former Real Sociedad player, but Real are understood to remain keen to team Alonso with the likes of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo as they form a new era of ‘galacticos’.

And Alonso is refusing to dismiss any outcome on his future, telling Don Balon: “In respect to all this I have not closed any door and we will just have to wait and see what happens.

“It is always positive when various teams are said to want you because that is better than nobody being interested, but I cannot say much more.

“I know that I have to keep playing well and will be able to decide what happens next whenever it arises.

“I do not think a move to Real Madrid is impossible, but I would also have no regrets at all staying at Liverpool.”

Reports on Merseyside claim that Benitez is to hold clear-the-air talks with Alonso this week as the pair attempt to settle their rumoured bust-up.

The 61-time Spain cap insists he has no problem working with his current boss, who brought him to England in 2004, but has not expanded upon their association.

“My relationship with Benitez is professional, just like he has with any other player. I believe that is how things will stay too,” Alonso continued.

“I am happy in England and have adapted, but I do miss certain things from Spain. I cannot rule out a move or even staying in the Premier League.

“I am happy there (England) and although I was a bit homesick at the start, I am still there.

“This situation is normal for me because I know what is actually happening, away from what is being reported. For that reason I am perfectly calm.”

Analysis:  This would be horrible for Liverpool fans as Xabi was in their engine room all season.  The Spanish International is one of the best passers of the ball in Europe, and it would be hard to replace talent like that.  Could you blame Rafael Benitez for last summers transfer speculation with Gareth Barry replacing Alonso?  A lot of people think so.
Maybe he is just riling up Rafa to get back at him for trying to get rid of Xabi last summer.  Maybe…probably not.  Could be genuine.
